TASEK GELUGOR: May 12, 2008
A day after brushing off rumours that he would be leaving the party, Tasek Gelugor Umno division chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar yesterday hit out at the state Umno leadership for its poor response to the dismal performance in the recent general election.
Mohd Shariff said some of the veteran Umno leaders were insensitive to the current political situation in the country.
He claimed that there had not been significant efforts by the party leadership to rebuild Umno.
"Until now, there has been no post-mortem conducted on why the party lost the support of the people here."
The former Tasek Gelugor member of parliament said Umno leaders must ask themselves how they and the Barisan Nasional component parties were going to wrest the state back from Pakatan Rakyat.
"In 1969, we lost the state and 39 years later, history was repeated.
"This time we suffered an even bigger defeat, losing three parliamentary and four state seats. So, we must work even harder."
