PENANG: April 21, 2008
The Chief Minister will still have the last say on whether Umno assemblyman Datuk Mahmud Zakaria can sit in the state government committee.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said a decision would be made only if Mahmud decides to accept the invitation made by Penang Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh to have him as a committee member in his portfolio.
“We don’t have objection (to Phee’s invitation) because his intentions are good. He has to get clearance from the Chief Minister (before accepting Mahmud into the committee),” he said yesterday.
Refusing to confirm or acknowledge the invitation, Lim said the state government would welcome any contribution regardless of race, religion or political background.
It was reported that Phee had sent a formal invitation to Mahmud, the Sungai Acheh assemblyman, on Friday.
Mahmud was recently named a member of Barisan's shadow executive council for the portfolio being held by Phee.
Phee said he had invited Mahmud to sit the committee so that he could get first-hand information and be part of the decision-making process.
When contacted on Saturday, the Umno Nibong Tebal Umno division deputy chief said he had yet to receive the invitation letter.
